My downstairs neighbor texted me. “Pat’s here. They are going in your place now.”
“Is that legal?” I texted back.
“Yes they gave us notice. You were on the e-mail,” she replied.
“I didn’t get it,” I said. I proceeded to tiptoe over to the door and turn the latch to lock the deadbolt. I was pretty sure Pat didn’t have a key to the deadbolt, and I wasn’t letting anyone in without prior notice. Then I tiptoed into the kitchen and deadbolted the back door too. I was still in my nightgown.
I sat back down at the breakfast table and listened while Pat and her daughter and their inspector tromped up the stairs, knocked loudly and called my name. I listened while they tried the locks. My heart was pounding. If they had the deadbolt key and got in and found me sitting here, what would I say?
“I thought you were avoiding her — lol,” my downstairs neighbor texted. “Are you close? They can’t get in your place to test the alarms.”
My phone rang. Shit! I let it finish ringing and go to voicemail. Then I put it on silent.
